Prof. Dr. Hidefumi Kobatake小畑秀文 (理事長)

President of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Japan

On behalf of the National Institute of Technology, Japan, I would like to welcome you to the 4th International Symposium on Technology for Sustainability (ISTS2014) in Taipei, Taiwan.

We are now facing many serious problems which threaten the very survival of humanity. These include environmental degradation, energy problems, global warming and food supply problems due largely to explosive population growth. To establish a sustainable earth is an urgent challenge for the continued existence of all humanity. Therefore, I believe that ISTS is a timely international symposium to address these issues.

ISTS was inaugurated with the mutual agreement between King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand and the National Institute of Technology, Japan in 2011. In the following year, it was held in Thailand again and it has become an annual international symposium. The third ISTS in 2013 attained new development. New partners, Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education and Vocational Training Council, Hong Kong, joined us and ISTS has become truly a global symposium open to world-wide participants.

The purpose of this symposium is to provide a general forum for students to present and exchange various kinds of information on technology for sustainability. In ISTS2014, a kind of innovation has been achieved. It is the establishment of International Student Organizing Committee and its contribution to ISTS2014. The purpose of this committee is to encourage students to organize special sessions on their own initiative. They will be strongly stimulated and encouraged through the experience of not only presenting a paper but also being the organizer of a session.

To prepare and host ISTS2014, all the members of the Organizing Committee, the Technical Program Committee and the Advisory board have been making great efforts. I realize how much we owe them for the success of ISTS2014. I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to all of them.

I hope that ISTS2014 will be interesting and informative for all participants.

Science and technology is the building block of every nation’s economic prosperity. In an increasingly globalized world, international collaboration in science and technology is becoming more and more important. The world-renown International Symposium on Technology for Sustainability is a one-of-its-kind platform that makes international collaboration possible by bringing students from Asia together. At this symposium, hundreds of students from different disciplines are able to present research breakthroughs, exchange innovative ideas, and collaborate on future projects.

National Taipei University of Technology (Taipei Tech) is honored to host the Fourth International Symposium on Technology for Sustainability (ISTS 2014) with support from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) of Japan and the Ministry of Education, Taiwan. Taipei Tech, as the leading technological university in Taiwan, has long been devoted to fostering talents in high tech. Our alumni have contributed significantly to Taiwan’s economic miracle through high tech; more than 10% of founders, board directors, and CEOs of Taiwan’s listed companies graduated from Taipei Tech.

The themes of this year’s symposium include science, engineering, and technology. The conference will be held in the exciting city of Taipei, which appeared on New York Time’s “52 Places to go in 2014.” I would like to welcome and thank all the delegates and organizers of this symposium in advance for their preparation and hard work. ISTS 2014 will no doubt be a great success.
